In 1856 the British assumed control over Avadh, thus casting Nawab Wajid Ali Shah into exile. Nawab was bound to a palace in Kolkata (also known as Calcutta). This act was one of many factors behind the First War of Independence (1857), resulting in the raging Seige of Lucknow.
